“It’s all about luxury through subtraction without creating waste” says Matteo Thun.

Thun is known for his sustainable, holistic outlook. He worked with the existing 19 buildings, protecting the 1920s character, with his ‘box in a box’ concept. Buildings are also integrated with the landscape – an effect achieved with paths, canals and dense foliage which in turn create a sense of privacy and space. Many rooms face the lagoon or gardens to enhance the sense of seclusion. The resort reflects the lagoon’s spirit – water, slowness, and silence.

Emphasis is placed on Venetian artisans with fabrics from Rubelli, bathroom architecture from Zucchetti, and Matteo Thun’s signature tables made of wood from the lagoon.

Thun also referenced the glass-blowing traditions of nearby Murano Island with customised light installations designed in collaboration with Barovier and Toso Venice and spherical Laguna Lamps, designed exclusively for the hotel with Antonio Rodriguez, made from hand-blown glass by Italian firm Artemide.

Thanks to its outstanding architecture and interior design, JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa has been awarded the title of Best Hotel & Tourism Resort Design.
